Today, tomorrow and to eternity

Necessary information
in case of death

One of the greatest challenges in life is dealing with the loss of a loved one, hence the pain of loss can be exhausting. The consequences can be physical as well as psychological, and in some cases you may not even think clearly.

Our co-workers and us undertake the responsibility to stand by the grieving family not only as funeral organizers, but by giving psychological support in dealing with loss. Wecooperate with a psychologist and a child psychologist who offer meaningful advice. We will help you complete all procedures required at this difficult time.

It has been proven that it is preferable in case of a death to contact our Funeral Home than turn to friends and acquaintances, who, by trying to help, may unintentionally cause more confusion than clarity, because every death is unique and can’t be compared with previous experiences.
This is why we recommend to visit a funeral home of your trust or make an appointment to visit you at home and discuss all details regarding the ceremony. Our Funeral Home has experience and a network of partners all over Greece and worldwide, consequently the transport of your loved one to his/her place of burial, as well as a personalised ceremony are guaranteed.

Cause & Place of death

Firstly, the family has to call the family doctor, who is familiar with the deceased medical history, in order to confirm the death and issue the Medical Certificate of Death, at the same time the family has to phone our Funeral Home in order to transfer the body to our cold storage unit until the ceremony-cremation. The person in charge of the case will visit you at home and discuss all details according the ceremony, the place of burial or cremation, the obituaries in the local press and help you fill in all required documents. If you can’t get a Medical Certificate of Death, please call our office immediately and we will help you.

In case your loved one dies in one of the above-mentioned facilities, the issuance of the Medical Certificate of Death will be made by the competent institute, as long as the medical history of the deceased is known to hospital doctors and the hospitalization was longer than 24 hours. It is important to the medical institute to be aware of the clinical condition of the deceased, e.g., chronic diseases, otherwise the institute is obliged by law to declare the death at the corresponding Police Station. If that is the case the autopsy procedure begins, in order to determine the cause of death and issue the Medical Certificate of Death prepared by the medical examiner. Some medical establishments have cold storage units where they keep the deceased until we transfer his/her body to our facilities. In other cases, upon your request, we can transfer the body immediately to our facilities. Call our Funeral Home directly after the occurrence and we will take care of all necessary procedures, we can visit you at home or we can arrange an appointment in our office to plan the details of the ceremony.

Probably, one of the toughest situations a family could experience is a sudden death, such as a car accident, an undetected serious health issue, drowning, suicide, a criminal act, etc. In these cases, depending on the place of death the competent authorities (Police, Traffic Police or Marine Police) will take charge of the situation and authorize an autopsy. The family and the witnesses (if any) will give a statement to the competent authority. If the incident happens in the limits of the Prefectures of Rethymno or Chania automatically the authorization for the autopsy will be given to the Forensic Laboratory of Crete pertain to the Ministry of Justice. Alternatively, if the incident happens in the limits of the Prefectures of Heraklion or Lasithi automatically the authorization for the autopsy will be given to the Forensic Laboratory of the Regional University General Hospital of Heraklion (PE.PA.G.N.I) which belongs to the Ministry of Education. An autopsy is not performed in case of sudden death if there is a chronic disease or the deceased is an elderly person and naturally the death is not caused by a criminal act. In such cases the family doctor can issue a Medical Certificate of Death, but it is not suggested.

After informing the competent authorities, the next step is to call our Funeral Home, we will transfer the body to the mortuary for the autopsy and handle all bureaucratic procedures. Afterwards we will plan the funeral-cremation ceremony.

In certain cases, such as car accidents, drownings or if the death occurs in the ambulance, the body will be transferred to the mortuary by the ambulance. In the event that this happens, we will inform you about the next steps and how to handle the circumstance through to the funeral-cremation ceremony or the transport in Greece or abroad.
